Why the first year still matters?

The first six weeks may be over, but healing continues. During the first year, the skin inside a new piercing is still developing, which is why choosing skin-friendly earrings with minimal nickel exposure continues to matter.
  • Around 6 weeks

The outside may look healed and the initial piercing earrings may be ready to change.
  • During the first year

The skin inside the piercing is still developing and deserves continued care.
  • What you wear matters

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the first year after piercing matter?

Although newly pierced ears may look healed after the first few weeks, the piercing itself can take up to a year to fully heal. During this time, the new skin inside the piercing is still thin and delicate, so choosing skin-friendly earrings and treating the area with a little extra care is especially important.

When can I change my piercing earrings?

For an earlobe piercing, Blomdahl recommends keeping the original piercing earrings in for approximately 6 weeks. For cartilage piercings, approximately 12 weeks is recommended. After this initial healing period, you can change your earrings — but because the piercing is still maturing, we recommend continuing with lightweight, skin-friendly earrings throughout the first year.

Can I wear normal earrings after 6 weeks?

You can change your original piercing earrings after the initial healing period, but we wouldn't recommend reaching for just any pair of fashion earrings.

For the remainder of the first year, choose earrings made from carefully selected, skin-friendly materials. Avoid earrings that are heavy, tight-fitting or made from materials that may release nickel, as the piercing is still developing beneath the surface.

Why should I avoid nickel during the first year?

Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, and Blomdahl's guidance notes that the risk of developing a contact allergy is greatest during the first year after piercing.

Because a nickel allergy can be lifelong once it develops, the first year is an important time to minimise unnecessary nickel exposure and choose jewellery designed with sensitive skin in mind.

What materials are best for newly pierced ears?

Look for lightweight, skin-friendly materials that minimise exposure to substances known to cause contact allergies.

Blomdahl First-Year Earrings are made using carefully selected materials such as pure medical-grade titanium and medical plastic. Both have been developed with sensitive skin and newly pierced ears in mind.

Medical Plastic or Medical Titanium - which should I choose?

Both are excellent choices for the first year — it really comes down to your preference.

Medical Plastic is lightweight and contains 0% nickel, making it a great choice for particularly sensitive ears or anyone wanting to minimise metal exposure.
Medical Titanium is also exceptionally lightweight, comfortable and durable. Blomdahl uses pure medical-grade titanium developed for sensitive skin, including those with nickel allergy.

Whichever you choose, both are designed with skin health at the forefront.

Are First Year Earrings suitable for children and school

Yes. Blomdahl has a wide range of small, lightweight styles that are particularly well suited to children and everyday wear.
For school, we recommend choosing simple studs or smaller styles that sit comfortably against the ear. As individual school jewellery policies vary, it's always worth checking your child's school's requirements before choosing a style.

Are First Year Earrings only after the first year?

Not at all!
“First-Year Earrings” simply means we've selected styles and materials that are particularly well suited to the important first year after piercing. Their skin-friendly materials make them a beautiful choice for everyday wear long after the first year is over — especially for anyone with sensitive ears.

My child's ears looked healed - why do the earrings still matter?

Because what you see on the outside doesn't always tell the whole story.
After the initial healing period, the piercing can look perfectly healed while the new skin inside the hole is still thin and developing. In fact, it can take up to a year for the piercing to fully heal.
That's why the earrings worn after the piercing earrings matter too. Choosing lightweight, skin-friendly jewellery during this first year helps give newly pierced ears the best environment to continue their healing journey.
